Is Neo-Darwinism to Blame? Why did James J Lee storm the Discovery channel headquarters with a gun and home-made bombs fastened to his chest, and make statements and demands such as:
"Saving the Planet means saving what's left of the non-human Wildlife by decreasing the Human population. That means stopping the human race from breeding any more disgusting human babies! You're the media, you can reach enough people. It's your responsibility because you reach so many minds!!!"
"Civilization must be exposed for the filth it is. That, and all its disgusting religious-cultural roots and greed. Broadcast this message until the pollution in the planet is reversed and the human population goes down!"
"Saving the environment and the remaining species diversity of the planet is now your mindset. Nothing is more important than saving them. The Lions, Tigers, Giraffes, Elephants, Froggies, Turtles, Apes, Raccoons, Beetles, Ants, Sharks, Bears, and, of course, the Squirrels.
The humans? The planet does not need humans."
Obviously, Lee valued animal life more than human life. Why? He appears to have been an evolutionist, since he wanted to place an "evolutionary biologist" on the judging panel of his proposed Discovery Channel TV show.
Obviously, being an evolutionist does not mean that a person will automatically value animal life more than human life. Nor does it automatically make someone a militant environmentalist, any more than being a Muslim does not automatically make someone a terrorist. But when we accept certain propositions, logic can naturally follows it's course. It seems that Lee accepted the following propositions, and logically followed a line of reasoning similar to this:
Humans are merely evolved primates. What right do we humans have to be here over any other species?
Humans are destroying the ecosystem of our planet.
The ecosystem is more important than any one single species.
So... humans, because they pollute and consume the environment, are not good. They are "filthy."
In order to save life on our planet (and since we have not found life anywhere else in the universe, there is nothing more valuable than our planet), the proliferation of humans MUST be stopped.
No one is listening to me. So I must resort to violence to get them to listen, in order to save the planet!
Other species of animals use violence all the time. Cheetah eat deer; fish eat fish; owls eat rabbits. So in the grand scheme of things, there is really nothing wrong with me using violence for a cause as noble as saving the planet!
Lee, no doubt, thought his beliefs were true and noble, just as the attackers of the World Trade Center did. Surely, Lee thought that he was acting heroically.
You see, no matter how much some may try to pretend it isn't true, evolutionary beliefs have logical consequences!
